“Son of a Critch”: Final Season Premieres Sept. 8

Date:

Mark Critch, the star of “Son of a Critch,” is excited about the upcoming final season of the show. He described the last episode as very special and possibly his favorite part of the entire series. The beloved CBC comedy, based on Critch’s bestselling memoir, will return for its fifth and final season on September 8, taking viewers on one last journey to Newfoundland.

In this concluding season, Mark’s last year of high school coincides with Newfoundland’s cod moratorium, leading to a chaotic period in his life. As he deals with first love, evolving friendships, family conflicts, and pursues his acting aspirations, the storyline promises to be engaging.

Benjamin Evan Ainsworth, who portrays the young Critch, shared that playing the role has been a fantastic journey, having dedicated a significant portion of his life to it. Fans may recognize him from HBO’s “House of the Dragon” and can look forward to seeing him as Link in the live-action “The Legend of Zelda” film.

For the cast, wrapping up the show felt like the end of an era, akin to outgrowing a beloved summer camp. Claire Rankin, who plays Mary, Critch’s mother, reflected on the lasting friendships and memories created during the show’s run. She also found a personal connection to her character through stories shared by locals who knew the real-life inspiration behind Mary.

Screen legend Malcolm McDowell, known for iconic roles in films like “A Clockwork Orange” and “Star Trek: Generations,” expressed his fondness for portraying Critch’s grandfather, considering it a highlight of his extensive career. He praised Mark Critch as a top-tier writer and cherished his time on the show.

The fifth and final season of “Son of a Critch” will premiere on CBC and CBC Gem on September 8, marking the end of an era for the beloved series.
