Five high-ranking Iranian officials are set to be sanctioned for their involvement in activities that disrupt international peace in the Strait of Hormuz, as announced by Canada’s Foreign Affairs Minister. Stressing the vital importance of unimpeded navigation in the strait for global trade and energy security, the minister’s statement highlighted the need to target individuals whose actions pose a threat to these principles.
The sanctions specifically target senior figures within the Islamic Republic of Iran, including members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), for their actions that have jeopardized a crucial international waterway. Among the officials facing sanctions are Ali Abdollahi, Lt.-Col. Ebrahim Zolfaghari, Ebrahim Azizi, Shahram Irani, and Hamid Hosseini.
Canada has now imposed sanctions on a total of 232 individuals and 260 entities connected to Iran’s security, intelligence, and economic sectors. These measures come in the context of mounting pressure to bring an end to the conflict, with efforts to finalize a peace agreement involving the U.S., Israel, and Iran facing challenges. Tensions have escalated since the outbreak of the war in February, with President Donald Trump vacillating between threats of escalation and claims of nearing a peace deal.
Iran, seeking to exert influence, has targeted vessels passing through the strait, a critical route for a significant portion of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas shipments. Trump has urged allies to help safeguard this vital oil shipping route, while Canada and other countries have called on Iran to cease blockades in the strait and expressed readiness to contribute to its reopening.
