University of Waterloo doctoral student Kaveeshan Thurairajah, while not a Nobel Prize winner, proudly holds an Ig Nobel laureate title. The Ig Nobels, a whimsical spin on the prestigious Nobel Prizes, commend the most unconventional and inventive research endeavors within academia. Thurairajah and his team clinched this year’s Ig Nobel Physics Prize for their endeavors in developing a urinal design that prevents splashing.
Reflecting on the moment when his mentor, fluid physicist Zhao Pan, shared the exciting news, Thurairajah recalled his elation at the prospect of winning the Ig Nobels. The team concocted various urinal prototypes in their pursuit of the perfect, splash-resistant design, such as the low-profile Nautilus and the tall Cornucopia. Thurairajah emphasized the practicality of the Nautilus design over the Cornucopia due to its reduced splash and ease of cleaning.
Attending the awards ceremony in Zurich, Thurairajah and his colleagues, donned in bright yellow rain gear, were prepared for accolades from their fellow eccentric scientists. He clarified that their research did not involve actual urine splashing, citing hygiene and scientific accuracy concerns. Instead, they crafted an anatomically precise urination simulation device based on established human male flow rates.
Despite the lighthearted nature of the study, Thurairajah underscored the societal value of enhancing public restroom facilities. Published in the journal PNAS Nexus last year, their findings contribute to making public spaces more welcoming. Apart from the University of Waterloo team, other Canadian researchers were also recognized at the ceremony for diverse studies, including the University of Toronto’s investigation into unethical behavior related to candy consumption and McGill University’s innovative use of mosquito proboscises in high-resolution 3D printing.
The Ig Nobel Awards, presented by the Annals of Improbable Research, have relocated to Europe after three and a half decades in the U.S. due to visa accessibility concerns. Thurairajah, collaborating with researchers from various countries, including China, the U.S., and Saudi Arabia, emphasized the importance of an international scientific community for mutual learning and progress.
