Three years after accomplishing his goal of owning a farm close to his childhood home, Matt Penney and his partner were scammed, losing $20,000 and disrupting their business expansion plans. Penney expressed how devastating the setback was, affecting every aspect of their operations. In April, Pengrove Farms, known for its premium locally sourced meat and regional products, was approached by a company posing as a catering business. Despite no red flags initially, issues arose with the payment during the subsequent order, revealing potential vulnerabilities for small Quebec businesses targeted by scammers.
Square, the payment processor used by the farm, alerted the family in mid-June that all transactions with the supposed caterers, totaling about $20,000, were fraudulent, placing the burden of reimbursement on the farm. Alana Cosgrove, the co-owner of Pengrove Farms, emphasized the significant financial strain this placed on their family-run business, as they still needed to pay suppliers to sustain operations.
The scam was built on establishing trust, as the fraudsters engaged in friendly conversations, visited in person, and made partial payments, creating a false sense of security. Expert opinion from Andréanne Bergeron highlighted the psychological aspect of trust exploited by scammers to carry out more sophisticated fraud schemes.
In Quebec, payment platforms lack the same regulatory oversight as banks or insurance companies, leaving merchants like Pengrove Farms responsible for chargeback liabilities resulting from fraudulent transactions. Frédérique Lissoir, a legal expert, pointed out the gap in protections for small businesses in Quebec compared to other jurisdictions with more robust safeguards against fraud.
Despite the challenges faced, Pengrove Farms is looking to engage with policymakers to advocate for better legislation to shield businesses from such scams. In the meantime, community support through a GoFundMe campaign and local market patrons has provided a lifeline for the family business, showcasing the power of solidarity during tough times. The family remains determined to recover from the ordeal and raise awareness to prevent similar incidents in the future.
