U.S. President Donald Trump has once again issued a warning to Oman as Iran confirms collaboration with the Gulf nation on a strategy to oversee maritime traffic through the vital Strait of Hormuz. The complete reopening of this crucial waterway has been a primary demand from the United States.
Simultaneously, the 60-day negotiation period seeking a peace agreement between the U.S. and Iran is nearing its conclusion, with no mention of an extension and both parties seemingly maintaining their initial positions.
The latest updates on Monday highlight Iran’s progress towards a deal with Oman. Iran announced that an understanding has been achieved with Oman regarding the transit route through the Strait of Hormuz, situated between the two countries. Efforts are underway to finalize the specifics for a joint statement.
According to Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei, discussions have been fruitful, leading to an agreement on the transit route map. Although exact details were not disclosed, preliminary information suggests that the deal will allow ships to pass through the strait, entering via a route near Iran and exiting near Oman. During an interim phase, vessels are expected to navigate without incurring fees or tolls.
The U.S. has been pushing for a satisfactory resolution to the strait’s reopening before considering the lifting of its blockade on Iranian ports. Following attacks by Israel and the U.S. on Iran on February 28, Iran effectively closed the strait, a critical passage for approximately one-fifth of the world’s oil trade.
In a previous instance, President Trump threatened Oman during an interview with Fox News reporter Trey Yingst, stating that the U.S. would take military action against Oman if it obstructed operations, emphasizing the point with strong language.
UN Secretary General António Guterres has called for a resumption of peace talks between Iran and the U.S., emphasizing the need to avoid escalating tensions through aggressive rhetoric. Guterres highlighted that a military solution is not viable for resolving the conflict.
Houthi rebels, backed by Iran in Yemen, have claimed responsibility for attacking a ship and four military boats in the Red Sea near Mokha, close to the strategic Bab el-Mandab Strait. The rebels allegedly fired ballistic missiles at these vessels, leading to their sinking and destruction, with the claimed targets believed to be affiliated with Saudi Arabia. However, no evidence has been presented to support this assertion.
In northern Iraq, drone attacks targeted two government officials, with the regional counterterrorism service attributing the assaults to the border with Iran. The attacks were aimed at the office of Masrour Barzani, the prime minister of Iraq’s Kurdish region, and the residence of a senior intelligence official. Meanwhile, U.S. forces in the Kurdish region of Iraq have commenced withdrawal in line with a pre-established agreement with Baghdad to conclude American military presence in Iraq by September 30.
