Obsession, the horror sensation, has captivated audiences worldwide, surpassing the $500 million mark at the global box office. This original film, released in the 2020s, has made history as the highest-grossing movie of its kind post-pandemic. Elemental, Pixar’s animated hit, previously held the record with $494.6 million in global earnings.
This micro-budget film tells the story of a woman consumed by violent obsession after a supernatural wish from a young man. Produced with a mere $750,000 budget, Obsession has now become the top-grossing film ever made for under $1 million, outperforming classics like Enter the Dragon.
Directed by 26-year-old Curry Barker, Obsession premiered on May 15 and saw its weekly grosses rise consistently for three weeks, a feat not achieved since E.T. The film’s domestic earnings reached $263.4 million, with an additional $238.1 million from overseas, totaling over $501.5 million to date.
Despite its success, Obsession has yet to premiere in South Korea. Focus Features acquired the film after its debut at the Toronto International Film Festival, making it the highest-grossing festival acquisition in history.
The film’s commercial triumph has opened doors for its young stars, with lead actress Inde Navarette set to star in Marvel’s upcoming X-Men film, and lead actor Michael Johnston in talks to join the cast of Universal’s new The Mummy movie.
Obsession’s stellar performance has set the stage for Barker’s next project, a horror film titled Anything but Ghosts, in which he will also star alongside co-writer Cooper Tomlinson.
