A decade has passed since The Tragically Hip’s final performance in Kingston, Ontario, yet Paul Langlois admits he is still grappling with the event. Reflecting on the milestone, Langlois, the band’s guitarist, expressed his disbelief about the passage of time and emphasized his gratitude for the impact their music has had on people.
The emotional evening saw lead singer Gord Downie bidding farewell to a packed audience at Kingston’s Rogers K-Rock Centre, now known as Slush Puppi Place, as well as countless viewers nationwide. Tears were shed as Downie delivered iconic songs like “Ahead by a Century” and “Bobcaygeon” for the last time.
Following their formation in 1984, The Tragically Hip released 13 studio albums and embarked on a final tour in 2016, culminating in the poignant hometown show on August 20, 2016. Downie’s battle with terminal brain cancer, diagnosed in December 2015, tragically led to his passing just over a year later at the age of 53.
In honor of the 10th anniversary, CBC will re-air the band’s historic final concert on Saturday. Guitarist Rob Baker expressed his appreciation for the ongoing support and remembrance of Gord, highlighting the deep connection fans continue to have with the band and their music.
Langlois recounted his initial unease before the last performance, which shifted when Downie’s infectious optimism set a positive tone for the night. Baker emphasized his role in supporting Downie’s final wish to connect with every audience member personally, despite the emotional toll it took on him.
Although initially concerned about Downie’s health affecting the shows, the band members witnessed his physical improvement throughout the farewell tour. Reflecting on the unexpected magnitude of the final show’s impact, Langlois noted the widespread communal viewing experiences that followed.
While ruling out any future reunions, Baker and Langlois acknowledged the band’s latest album release, “Live July 22 – August 20, 2016,” featuring recordings from the 2016 tour. The process of compiling the album was challenging, but Baker emphasized the healing power of music, citing a personal moment of realization and grief shared with Downie.
Their journey serves as a testament to the enduring influence of music in navigating life’s complexities and emotions.
