Osee Podolsky, who manages operations at Podolski Honey Farms, expressed concerns about the impact of recent tariffs imposed by the United States on Canadian goods, including natural honey. The family-owned farm in Ethelbert, Manitoba, primarily ships its honey to customers in the U.S., but with the new tariffs in place, Podolsky fears the business, established by his grandfather over 70 years ago, could face financial difficulties.
The tariffs were implemented after failed trade negotiations between Canada and the U.S. Prime Minister Mark Carney stated that despite progressing towards a mutually beneficial agreement, the U.S. made unreasonable demands that would harm Canadian interests. He highlighted issues related to French language protections and trade restrictions as major points of contention.
In response to the tariffs, Canada plans to impose retaliatory tariffs. Podolski Honey Farms, like many other small businesses, is feeling the immediate impact of the tariffs, jeopardizing their usual sales to American customers. The farm is now focusing on fulfilling Canadian contracts and strategizing with financial experts to navigate the challenging times ahead.
Loren Remillard, president of the Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce, expressed disappointment over the tariffs and emphasized the importance of standing firm for Canada’s interests. The uncertainty created by the tariffs extends beyond honey producers, affecting industries like steel production. Selkirk Mayor Larry Johannson called for unity in supporting Canadian businesses and exploring new trade opportunities.
Podolsky emphasized the mutual benefits of Canada-U.S. trade for beekeepers on both sides of the border and called for the removal of tariffs to safeguard this relationship. Despite the setbacks, he remains hopeful for a resolution in the near future to alleviate the economic strain caused by the trade dispute.
