Israeli airstrikes in southern Lebanon resulted in the deaths of at least 11 individuals on Saturday, marking some of the most severe attacks since the fragile truce between Israel and Hezbollah commenced in June.
The strikes, which targeted a residence on the outskirts of Ansar village, claimed the lives of seven people, including three children, and injured two others. Another strike in Deir al-Zahrani village left four dead and 17 wounded. These incidents occurred following a “framework agreement” established on June 26 between Israel and the Lebanese government. The agreement outlined plans for Israeli forces to withdraw from southern Lebanon in exchange for Hezbollah’s disarmament. Notably, Hezbollah, an Iran-backed militant group, did not engage in direct talks and was not party to the agreement.
Israeli Prime Minister Nawaf Salam condemned the airstrikes, emphasizing that they instilled fear among residents and hindered efforts to stabilize the region. He criticized the targeting of non-military structures and civilians, stressing the responsibility of the Lebanese state to address any military presence within the country.
Lebanese President Joseph Aoun viewed the strikes as a deliberate message to disrupt ongoing negotiation efforts and American initiatives aimed at implementing the agreement. Despite the truce, intense Israeli airstrikes on the strategic Ali Taher hill and surrounding areas persisted, prompting the Israeli military to respond to perceived threats posed by Hezbollah.
Hezbollah, in response, urged the Lebanese government to halt the aggression and prioritize the protection of its citizens over engaging in talks with Israel. The group accused the U.S. of complicity in Israeli actions and warned of retaliatory measures against any further aggression.
Recent escalations in violence have heightened tensions in the region, with casualties reported on both sides. The conflict, which originated in March, has claimed over 4,000 lives in Lebanon, including civilians, amid ongoing hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah.
