“Rare Otter Sighting Delights Wildlife Enthusiasts at Grimsby Wetlands”

Date:

Wildlife enthusiast Terry Chettle captured a unique moment at Grimsby Wetlands in early August as he observed a green heron being playfully bothered by a river otter. The unexpected appearance of the otter surprised Chettle, who managed to photograph it as it posed on a log.

During the same outing, Bruce and Laurie Mackenzie encountered Chettle, who pointed out the otter. Bruce Mackenzie noted the rarity of the sighting, mentioning that it was the first recorded near the wetlands in recent times. The wetlands, once a sewage storage area managed by the Hamilton Naturalists’ Club, now span approximately 12 hectares along Lake Ontario’s South Shore, attracting hikers and birdwatchers.

The otter sighting is a positive sign for habitat restoration and water quality, according to Mackenzie, who highlighted previous rare species sightings like the least bittern in the wetlands. Otters symbolize a conservation success story in the region, as Laura Timms from Credit Valley Conservation emphasized. The authority, covering the Credit River watershed, published an article in 2025 detailing the otters’ resurgence in the area.

Timms mentioned an increase in documented otter sightings, including instances of otters giving birth at conservation areas this year. The revival of otter populations in North America is attributed to sustained conservation efforts that have restored degraded environments. Despite this success, Timms stressed the need for ongoing restoration and protection of habitats to support biodiversity and ensure the survival of various species.

River otters, known to grow up to 1.4 meters in length and weighing between five to 14 kilograms, are carnivorous mammals that inhabit rivers, lakes, and creeks. They feed on fish, clams, insects, and other aquatic creatures, showcasing their adaptability to diverse aquatic environments. Timms urged for continued efforts to preserve wetlands and habitats to foster diverse ecosystems and promote conservation achievements similar to the otters’ resurgence.
