“Céline Dion Opens Up About Rare Neurological Disorder”

Date:

Céline Dion is gearing up for her upcoming five-week residency in Paris and has opened up about her battle with stiff person syndrome, a rare neurological autoimmune disorder she was diagnosed with in 2022. The Canadian music icon revealed that she had been experiencing symptoms of the condition for 17 years before receiving a formal diagnosis.

The pain from stiff person syndrome, which intensified in 2020, was debilitating, at times making it difficult for Dion to walk. She shared that she sometimes required a high dosage of Valium to manage the symptoms. Stiff person syndrome is a progressive disorder that affects a small percentage of the population and is characterized by rigid muscles and painful spasms that can be triggered by stress, loud noises, or sudden movements. There is no known cause for the condition, and specific treatments are not yet approved, although various therapies can help alleviate symptoms.

Before being diagnosed, Dion would attribute show cancellations to minor ailments like coughs or sinus infections, not wanting to reveal the true extent of her suffering. She expressed feeling a sense of dishonesty towards her fans, who had supported her career through attending her concerts and buying her records.

Following her diagnosis, Dion made the difficult decision to cancel all her remaining shows. She has been absent from public performances since the Paris 2024 Olympic Games but is determined to make a comeback in September. Dion’s recovery routine includes a combination of medication, physical therapy, vocal therapy, and immunotherapy. Additionally, she has been diligently participating in 90-minute Pilates sessions three times a week and ballet classes twice a week to prepare for her return to the stage.

Described as someone who is always on the move, Dion is grateful for the opportunity to perform again, considering it a miraculous outcome. She emphasized the importance of cherishing the present and expressed her readiness to resume her performances. Dion’s Paris residency, featuring 26 concerts from September 12 to May 29 next year, marks her highly anticipated return to the stage.
