Liverpool receive Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk contract boost after “progress” claim

Published:

Liverpool are close to finalising contract extensions for both Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk. The pair are both out of contract at the end of the season and would leave a huge hole if they were to leave.

However, it appears as though both Salah and Van Dijk are set to remain at Anfield in what will come as a huge boost to Liverpool and manager Arne Slot. The pair have played a key role in Liverpool’s Premier League title bid this season, with Salah netting 27 goals in 31 games and Van Dijk starting every single match. Liverpool are ‘confident’ that the duo will sign new deals, according to NBC, and that it is ‘more a case of when rather than if that is going to happen’. It comes after Van Dijk revealed that there had been “progress” in the negotiations.

“There is progress, yeah,” Van Dijk told reporters after Liverpool’s 3-2 defeat to Fulham. “I don’t know, we’ll see. Listen, these are internal discussions and we’ll see.

“I love the club, I love the fans and they were there for us again and we wanted to reward them at Fulham. But want I them to be there against West Ham on Sunday again and make the stadium an amazing venue like always for us.”

However, it appears as though Trent Alexander-Arnold is set to leave Liverpool in the summer. Alexander-Arnold’s contract is also due to expire at the end of the season and he is expected to join Real Madrid on a free transfer.

The England international has not spoken publicly about his future since September, when he stated: “I want to be a Liverpool player this season [as a minimum] is what I will say.

“I have been at the club 20 years now. I have signed four or five contract extensions and none of those have been played out in public – and this one won’t be either.”

Alexander-Arnold is currently out injured, having picked up an ankle problem during Liverpool’s Champions League exit against Paris Saint-Germain last month, but he is expected to return to action before the end of the season.

“There has been no change at all in his behaviour or the way we look at things,” Slot told Sky Sports earlier this month when asked about the defender. “Nothing has changed at all. No, not for us, not for me.

“I’ve worked with these three players for almost eight or nine months now, and the same situation is still there. The outside world doesn’t know what’s going to happen.

“There is a lot of talk about [Trent], like there is about Virgil and about Mo. But that also tells you what a quality player he is, because there are many players around the world that have a contract that ends in the summer, and nobody talks about them.

“But there are a lot of [people talking] about these players for the simple reason that they are so good. But here in the building, we don’t talk about that.”
