“Canadian Researchers Shine in Global Ecological Image Contest”

Date:

Two Canadian researchers have been recognized in a global image competition that showcases ecological research. The 2026 joint BMC Ecology and Evolution and BMC Zoology image competition honored 11 photos from researchers worldwide at different career stages. These photos feature animals in their natural habitats, scientists and students engaged in ecological research, and various natural scenes.

Liam Brennan, a master’s student and photographer at the University of New Brunswick (UNB), won the competition’s research in action category with his image titled “Intertidal education.” Allen (Haolun) Tian, a post-doctoral researcher affiliated with Queen’s University, Hangzhou Normal University, and Zhejiang University in China, secured the “protecting our planet” category with his photo named “A bridge between past and present.”

For researchers, images serve as a means to document their work and provide a glimpse into the world of science. According to Brennan, these images play a crucial role in building public trust in the significance of environmental education and ecological research.

Brennan captured the photo “Intertidal education” while supervising undergraduate students monitoring coastal fish species in St. Andrews, N.B. The image showcases the students conducting research activities at night, illuminated by the full moon in the background, capturing a moment of curiosity on their faces.

Tian’s picture, “A bridge between past and present,” comprises 33 drone photos of the Long Sault Parkway connecting islands in the upper St. Lawrence River. This unique composition offers a panoramic view of the region, emphasizing the ecosystem’s interconnectedness and the impact of conservation efforts.

Both photographers emphasize the role of images in fostering natural empathy and connecting viewers to environments that may be inaccessible to them. Through their work, they aim to raise awareness about the importance of ecological studies and conservation efforts.

The BMC image competition also recognized other outstanding entries, showcasing a diverse range of ecological research themes and perspectives. These captivating images not only highlight the beauty of nature but also underscore the importance of preserving our planet’s ecosystems for future generations.
