In early December, when we decorated our Saskatoon home with holiday lights, the absence of snow didn’t deter my admiration for the house. Embracing the belief that “Home is where the heart is,” after three years in Canada, we finally found a place to truly call our own.
Upon entering the house for the first time during our house-hunting journey, the abundance of windows immediately caught our attention. Natural light flooded every room, including the basement, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere. My child expressed their delight by stating, “Ma, this feels like home,” a sentiment that had been missing for a while.
Characterized by simplicity and coziness, our new home in Saskatoon boasted a graceful front lawn and a backyard with swaying poplar trees. The charm of the house, with its ample windows, struck a perfect balance – not too grand, not too small, but just right. It was a love-at-first-sight moment for us.
Reflecting on my childhood home in India, as I stood surrounded by Christmas lights in our Saskatoon backyard, memories of a similar natural expanse flooded my mind. Recreating such nostalgic moments with my family filled me with immense gratitude.
The transition from our previous home in Delhi to Saskatoon brought about uncertainties and a sense of impermanence, exacerbated by the limitations of renting. Our rental apartment felt impersonal, lacking the warmth and personalization that make a house a home. However, the decision to purchase a house in September marked a turning point, symbolizing a new beginning for our family.
Our new home in Saskatoon has become the cornerstone of our settling process, gradually transforming into a space filled with our unique identity and cherished moments. As we envision building new memories and milestones in this house, Saskatoon has evolved from a mere location on the map to a place of hope and belonging for us.
In this journey of finding home, we have learned that home is not just a place of origin but a conscious choice of where we belong. Our house in Saskatoon signifies more than just physical bricks and mortar – it embodies the foundation of a new chapter in our lives.
