“Schools Close Early as Storm Goretti Approaches UK”

Date:

Schools in Britain are closing early due to the approaching Storm Goretti. The storm, named by Meteo France, is expected to bring significant snowfall of up to 30cm in parts of England and Wales. Weather warnings have been issued for snow, wind, rain, and ice nationwide, leading to anticipated travel disruptions and power outages.

Concerns over the severe weather conditions have prompted school closures in the South West, where wind speeds could reach 100mph. As temperatures plummet rapidly, a prolonged cold spell is forecasted to persist throughout the weekend, with blizzard conditions expected in England, Wales, and Scotland.

Neil Armstrong, the chief forecaster at the Met Office, emphasized that Storm Goretti will present multiple hazards, with snow accumulation likely in Wales and the Midlands, and strong winds in the far South West. An amber warning has been issued for areas at greatest risk, advising the public to stay updated on the forecast and heed local authority messages.

The Met Office warns of widespread travel disruptions on roads, in the air, and on public transportation, including potential power cuts. Communities may face isolation, and mobile phone coverage could be impacted. Snow warnings cover 96 areas, with substantial snowfall anticipated in England and Wales, leading to the closure of over 1,000 schools earlier this week.
