Russia conducted a second nationwide drone and missile attack on Ukraine in four days. The assault involved 300 drones, 18 missiles, and seven cruise missiles, targeting eight regions and resulting in at least four casualties in Kharkiv. The attack occurred amidst freezing temperatures, with most strikes aimed at critical infrastructure like heating systems and electricity substations. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky emphasized the importance of internal resilience and continuous support for Ukraine, highlighting the need for air defense systems, especially during winter.
The strikes caused power outages affecting several hundred thousand households in Kyiv, exacerbating the city’s existing power shortages. Citizens resorted to government-provided temporary shelters, known as “Points of Invincibility,” for essential services like warmth and electricity. The recent escalation follows a previous attack by Russia, which utilized new hypersonic missiles in a large-scale offensive on western Ukraine.
The United States condemned Russia’s actions as a dangerous escalation, particularly as peace negotiations were underway. Russia’s strategy of depriving Ukrainian civilians of basic necessities like heat and water aims to weaken public resistance to its invasion. The attacks in Kharkiv and Odesa resulted in multiple injuries, occurring after Russia rejected the latest peace proposals from the US.
According to the UN, last year marked the deadliest period for civilians in Ukraine since 2022, with a significant increase in casualties compared to 2024. Zelensky called for expedited deliveries of air defense systems from the US and Europe to counter Russia’s ongoing offensive. Meanwhile, Russian air defenses intercepted 11 Ukrainian drones, with reported engagements over the Rostov region.
As the conflict approaches its fourth year in February, the origins of the war trace back to the Maidan Revolution, leading to confrontations between pro-Russian factions and Ukrainian forces aligned with western interests.
