Split, a popular European city among British tourists, is implementing a strict alcohol ban. It is the first city in Croatia to prohibit the sale of alcohol in shops and liquor stores after 8pm. This decision comes in response to the mayor’s concerns over unruly behavior from intoxicated visitors in the historical center.
The new regulation, proposed by Mayor Tomislav Šuta, will enforce restrictions on late-night alcohol sales in specific areas of the city from 8pm to 6am, effective this summer. The focus will be on the city center, known for its numerous clubs, bars, and late-night establishments, which have been identified as problematic zones.
Mayor Šuta highlighted that the enforcement is aimed at enhancing the safety and quality of life for residents in these areas. The possibility of extending the ban to other parts of Split is not off the table. The ban targets grocery stores and liquor shops while exempting clubs and restaurants, allowing visitors to continue enjoying drinks in licensed venues beyond 8pm.
Darijo Šarić, CEO of VIP Holiday Booker, applauded the ban as part of Croatia’s tourism rebranding efforts. He emphasized the shift towards promoting the country’s cultural heritage, natural beauty, and family-friendly environment over its previous party destination image.
These measures are intended to promote responsible drinking while maintaining a balance between fun and preserving the local environment. The move aligns with broader initiatives in Croatia to address issues of overtourism and antisocial behavior, as seen in Hvar’s noise restrictions and ongoing preservation efforts in Dubrovnik’s Old Town.
Efforts to manage tourism impact include reducing cruise ship numbers, regulating visitor arrivals, and implementing visitor monitoring systems to maintain a sustainable and enjoyable experience for both tourists and residents.
