Since 2023, Mexico has enforced stringent laws against smoking and vaping in public areas, with fines of up to £150 for violators. President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo recently implemented a constitutional reform prohibiting the importation, sale, and distribution of vaping products. The law, effective immediately, covers all activities related to electronic cigarettes and vaping devices.
Despite popular belief, tourists are not exempt from these rules, and customs officials at key destinations like Cancún, Cabo San Lucas, and Cozumel are actively enforcing the ban. Travelers risk having their vaping devices confiscated, facing significant fines of up to $12,500, and even potential detainment or imprisonment if caught violating the regulations.
Reports indicate that individuals caught with vaping devices in Mexico have been given hefty fines or detention, with penalties as severe as eight years in prison. Other countries like India, Thailand, and Singapore have also implemented strict vaping bans. In the UK, the number of vapers has surpassed traditional tobacco smokers, with an estimated 5.6 million British individuals using vaping products, accounting for approximately 11% of the population.
