Around 65,000 employees at the renowned retailer, John Lewis, are set to receive a substantial pay increase starting in April. The John Lewis Partnership, which includes department stores and Waitrose supermarkets, announced that shop floor wages will see a nearly 7% boost, equivalent to around £1,600 annually for full-time workers. Employees at the company are referred to as “partners” due to the unique employee-owned structure.
Although the decision on a possible partner bonus for this year is pending, with none being granted since 2022, Jason Tarry, the partnership’s chair, affirmed the commitment to providing a bonus at the earliest opportunity. The pay rise announcement is separate from the bonus decision, which will be determined by the Board in March. Under the leadership of former Tesco executive Mr. Tarry and managing director Peter Ruis, John Lewis has been striving to revitalize its financial performance following previous losses.
John Lewis disclosed that 99.6% of partners will benefit from the pay increase, amounting to a total of £108 million. Effective April 1, shop floor employees at John Lewis and Waitrose will witness a 6.9% wage hike, with minimum hourly rates reaching £13.25 nationwide and £14.80 in stores located within the M25 region.
For partners acquiring enhanced skills and specialized roles, hourly pay will rise to £14.31, reaching £15.98 within the M25 area. These increments partly reflect the rise in the statutory National Living Wage, which will increase by 4.1% to £12.71 per hour for workers aged 21 and over starting April.
Helen Webb, the chief people officer at the John Lewis Partnership, emphasized the significance of investing £108 million in partner salaries to boost their monthly earnings consistently. This wage growth underscores the ongoing commitment to partner compensation, aligning with past practices and ensuring that the rewards for partners’ hard work are integrated into their regular paychecks as the company continues to invest in its future.
In addition to the salary increase, partners at the company enjoy various benefits, including discounts at John Lewis and Waitrose, up to a 12% pension contribution, discounted rates at affiliated hotels, financial support for personal development and leisure activities, subsidized meals, and a comprehensive health and wellness package that includes options for physiotherapy and counseling referrals.
The company reported a significant increase in losses for the six months ending in July, attributing the rise to restructuring costs, new tax implications, and regulatory charges. John Lewis Partnership operates 36 department stores and over 300 Waitrose supermarkets, aiming to navigate challenges and enhance its financial performance in the competitive retail landscape.
