Royal Mail Warns of Service Disruptions in 100+ UK Postcodes

Date:

Royal Mail issued a caution about potential service disruptions in over 100 UK postcodes this week. The postal service identified 38 delivery offices that might face delays due to severe weather conditions and increased employee sick leave. These offices collectively serve approximately 100 postcodes nationwide.

A company representative mentioned that adverse weather events like storms Goretti, Ingrid, and Chandra in January, coupled with higher-than-normal sick leave, have caused temporary disruptions in certain delivery routes. Royal Mail assured customers that the majority of mail is still being delivered on schedule and acknowledged the frustration caused by delayed deliveries.

In response to any delays impacting routes, the company stated that it would deploy additional resources to expedite deliveries. This announcement follows a report by the BBC alleging that some letters were being held in delivery offices for extended periods, with claims that packages were being prioritized over letters in some locations.

Royal Mail highlighted the increase in parcel deliveries due to the growth of online shopping, while the volume of addressed letters in their network has declined. The company, responsible for serving nearly two million postcodes, commits to delivering mail six days a week and strives to maintain punctual deliveries of both letters and parcels.

Last year, the regulatory body Ofcom approved Royal Mail’s proposal to discontinue second-class letter deliveries on Saturdays and transition to a service every other weekday. Although initially piloted in 35 delivery offices, the nationwide implementation has been postponed due to unresolved negotiations with the Communication Workers Union.
