A new case of bird flu has been identified in commercial poultry at a third farm situated close to a market town. The highly contagious avian influenza strain was verified today at a farm in the Newark-on-Trent area within Nottinghamshire’s Newark and Sherwood district, according to an announcement from the government. Surrounding the premises, a 3km protection zone and a 10km surveillance zone have been established. All birds on the affected farm will undergo humane culling.
This latest occurrence follows two previous bird flu confirmations at farms nearby Newark-on-Trent on December 26 and December 30. In both instances, similar protection and surveillance zones were enforced, and all poultry on the infected farms were culled.
A declaration on the government website includes a map detailing the protection and surveillance zones related to this recent case. The location seems to be just north of Winthorpe and Langford, near North Muskham.
Cases of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1 are regularly disclosed by the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs and the Animal and Plant Health Agency.
HPAI is the severe variant of bird flu, resulting in high bird mortality rates. In contrast, low pathogenic avian influenza (LPAI) is less severe, typically causing symptoms like sneezing or decreased egg production but can potentially evolve into the severe form. H5N1, a highly contagious subtype, has caused significant poultry casualties globally.
The virus can be transmitted to humans through close contact and can be lethal, as indicated by the NHS. Although human infections in the UK are rare, most cases are reported in regions of Asia and North Africa. Human transmission of bird flu can occur through direct contact with an infected bird or exposure to infected bird feces or carcasses.
Symptoms of bird flu in humans typically manifest four to six days following contact with an infected bird and can vary from mild to severe, including fever, cough, sore throat, nasal congestion, sneezing, breathing difficulties, wheezing, and eye irritation.
