Royal Mail is potentially considering raising the price of first-class stamps, a move that could further frustrate customers already dissatisfied with the current slow service. While no official decision has been announced yet, the postal service has a history of increasing stamp prices around early April.
In the previous year, the cost of a first-class stamp went up by 5p to £1.70, following a significant surge from 76p in 2020. Second-class stamp prices have also risen from 65p in 2020 to 87p in the previous April.
Concerns have been raised by Royal Mail whistleblowers who claim that mail delivery services are being impacted, with rounds being missed daily and parcels receiving priority over letters due to operational strain. Despite these claims, Royal Mail has denied prioritizing parcels over letters.
The company attributed some of the recent disruptions to adverse weather conditions and higher-than-usual sick leave, causing temporary delays on certain mail routes. Quarterly reports from Royal Mail are expected to reveal potential missed delivery targets, following a hefty £21 million fine imposed last year for failing to meet delivery goals.
Royal Mail’s performance in delivering first-class and second-class mail on time has fallen short of targets for several consecutive years, resulting in fines. The company has been authorized to reduce second-class letter deliveries to five days every two weeks as part of adjustments to cope with declining letter volumes.
Although Royal Mail has initiated changes to its service obligations, disagreements with the Communication Workers Union persist, casting doubts on the company’s ability to improve services in the future. Recent challenges, including severe weather conditions and staff absences, have led to warnings of potential delays across numerous UK postcodes.
