UK Refuses US Request for Iran Attacks, Straining Relations

Date:

Britain has reportedly declined the United States’ request to conduct attacks on Iran from UK military bases, leading to tensions between the two nations. While the US President, Donald Trump, appears indifferent to international law, the UK prioritizes adherence to legal norms.

Despite hosting a significant number of US troops on UK bases, the UK has historically held the authority to authorize offensive actions from its territories by military personnel under the 1951 NATO Status of Forces Agreement and the Visiting Forces Act.

Recent tensions have escalated due to Trump’s displeasure over the UK’s arrest of Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor. The denial of permission for bombers to launch operations from UK bases could strain relations between Keir Starmer and Trump, as an attack on Iran without provocation may be considered illegal under international law.

According to the 1951 regulations, a combat mission involves armed US aircraft ready to strike another country. Consequently, any bomber departing from RAF Fairford or Diego Garcia and heading towards Iran would be classified as part of a combat mission.

The UK government’s decision likely stems from a commitment to legality, allowing the US to refuel but not launch attacks. In the past, the UK sanctioned US airstrikes on Libya under Operation El Dorado Canyon in response to specific evidence of involvement in a terrorist incident.

As the US pressures Iran to scale back its nuclear and ballistic weapons programs and support for proxy forces, a significant military build-up in the Persian Gulf, led by the USS Abraham Lincoln and other warships, signals potential actions against Iran if no agreement is reached.

Trump’s threats of strikes on Iran within the coming days underscore the escalating tensions. The UK’s stance on impeding threats towards Iran could strain diplomatic relations with the US, requiring substantial efforts to mend ties.
