Team GB’s speed skater Niall Treacy initially placed sixth in the short track men’s 1500m final but was later relegated to ninth position due to a collision involving him and two other competitors. The decision by the referee to penalize Treacy resulted in his drop in rankings during the final race on Saturday, which had additional participants due to previous crashes in the semi-finals.
Despite crossing the finish line almost 40 seconds ahead of the seventh-placed Shoaong Liu from China, who was also involved in the collision, Treacy missed out on a higher placement. Another Chinese skater, Long Sun, had to withdraw from the race due to an injury.
The gold medal was secured by Jens van ‘T Wout from the Netherlands, maintaining their strong presence in the sport, while Korea’s Hwang Daehoen and Latvia’s Roberts Kruzbergs claimed the remaining spots on the podium.
Former Team GB skater Wilf O’Reilly expressed disappointment over Treacy’s misfortune, highlighting that Treacy was performing well and had the potential to podium. Treacy, recounting the incident that dashed his medal hopes, mentioned that his focus on keeping up with the race leaders led him to overlook the skaters behind him, culminating in the collision that disrupted his performance.
Following a thorough review of the race, Treacy’s disqualification left Team GB supporters venting their frustration on social media platforms. In an interview with TNT Sports, Treacy acknowledged the unexpected turn of events but expressed pride in his performance and the support he received. Despite missing out on a medal opportunity, Treacy reflected on the positive experience of competing in the Olympic final and hoped to have made his supporters proud.
