“Peckham Youth Embrace ‘My Ends’ Program for Community Support”

Date:

On a chilly winter evening, the wind howls outside the Damilola Taylor Centre in Peckham, while rain beats against the glass roof inside, masking the sounds of trainers squeaking on the gym floor. Despite the harsh weather, a group of teenage boys engage in a spirited basketball game led by youth workers from the Active Communities Network as part of the ‘My Ends’ program in Southwark.

Sammy, a 14-year-old participant, reflects on the effort it took to reach the center and how it has positively impacted him, offering a sense of protection. The tragic story of Damilola Taylor, which still resonates 25 years later, is familiar to every young person present that night, highlighting the ongoing concerns about safety and security in the community.

Peckham’s Labour and Co-operative MP, Miatta Fahnbulleh, emphasizes the need for safe spaces for young people, drawing attention to the loneliness and lack of belonging experienced by many. Fahnbulleh, also a minister in the Communities department, aims to ensure that by 2035, no child in Peckham will be more than a 10-minute walk away from a youth service.

The government’s new youth strategy, launched by Secretary of State Lisa Nandy in Peckham, focuses on investing £500 million to enhance youth services nationwide. This initiative includes plans to construct or refurbish 250 youth centers and establish 50 ‘Young Futures Hubs’ for career guidance and mental health support.

Acknowledging the impact of past funding cuts on youth services, Fahnbulleh and Nandy champion a renewed focus on providing young people with meaningful spaces and opportunities for personal growth. The Co-op Party echoes this sentiment, advocating for inclusive community initiatives that prioritize the well-being of both young and old residents.

In Peckham, initiatives like MyEnds Southwark aim to counter negative influences and provide a sense of community and purpose for young people. Participants like Benedict and a 12-year-old boy express gratitude for the positive impact of such programs on their lives, highlighting the importance of accessible and supportive youth services.

Looking ahead, Fahnbulleh is committed to fulfilling her promise of ensuring that all young people in Peckham have easy access to youth provisions within a short walk. By prioritizing youth well-being and community engagement, these initiatives strive to create a more inclusive and supportive environment for the next generation.
