“Man Fatally Shot in Home During Facebook Marketplace Sale”

Date:

Tragedy struck when a man was fatally shot in his own home while attempting to sell an iPhone through a Facebook Marketplace transaction, unaware of the impending danger.

On January 18, Michael Ryan Burke, a 42-year-old U.S. Marine veteran, reached out to emergency services and bid farewell to his family after being shot during the iPhone sale at his residence in Missouri, as confirmed by the Columbia Police Department in an official statement.

The fatal incident occurred around 8:15pm local time when police responded to reports of gunshots at Ridgemont Court in Columbia. Upon arrival, officers discovered Michael with severe gunshot wounds inside his home. Despite being rushed to a nearby hospital, he succumbed to his injuries.

Despite his critical condition, Burke managed to contact emergency services and provide a description of the suspects involved in the attack, according to details from a probable cause statement obtained by PEOPLE.

Before help arrived, Burke sent heartfelt messages to his mother and sister, expressing his love and bidding them goodbye, as recounted by his close friend Jerry Reifeiss to KRCG13.

Subsequently, on January 20, authorities arrested three 18-year-olds and one juvenile male in connection with Burke’s tragic death.

The suspects, identified as Kobe Aust, Joseph Crane, Alexis Baumann, and a male juvenile, have been charged with second-degree murder, first-degree robbery, and first-degree burglary. They are currently detained without bond at the Boone County Jail, with the juvenile held in custody at the Boone County Juvenile Office.

Legal representation for the accused individuals remains uncertain at this time.

During the investigation, law enforcement examined Burke’s Facebook messages and found communications related to the iPhone 15 Pro sale, valued at approximately $585.

Burke had shared his address with one of the suspects, who confirmed their presence at around 8:10 p.m. Reifeiss described Burke as a courageous military veteran who had undertaken risky missions as a decorated Marine.

Reifeiss reflected on Burke’s final actions, stating, “That was just Ryan. He always prioritized others and wanted to ensure his feelings were known. Even in his last moments, he sought to provide crucial information to bring justice and convey his enduring love to his loved ones.”
