In a bold move to secure control over Greenland, President Donald Trump has reportedly considered offering each of the island’s residents a staggering $1 million. This unprecedented proposal, as per reports from The Daily Mail, could amount to a substantial £42.5 billion expense for the United States, considering Greenland’s population of approximately 57,000 individuals. The equivalent in other currencies would be around £750,000 or €850,000 if the residents opt to become part of the United States.
Despite the hefty cost, President Trump, who oversees a defense budget of £595 billion, may view this offer as a relatively small investment. The President’s shift in strategy came on Wednesday, January 22, when he announced the abandonment of proposed tariffs on eight European nations aimed at exerting pressure to acquire U.S. control over Greenland. This decision followed his earlier insistence on obtaining the island with full rights and ownership.
Through a social media post, Trump revealed that he had reached an agreement with NATO’s leader on a potential framework for future Arctic security arrangements, potentially easing geopolitical tensions. Discussions are also underway concerning the Golden Dome missile defense program, a sophisticated system valued at $175 billion that will introduce U.S. weaponry into space for the first time.
In his address, the President characterized Greenland as a “cold and inconvenient” territory, highlighting the historical contributions of the U.S. to Europe, particularly during World War II. Trump emphasized the comparatively minor nature of his request within the context of NATO relations, hinting at the possibility of employing force if necessary, despite his preference for diplomatic negotiations.
