The Winter Olympics in Milano Cortina experienced a power outage just 10 minutes after commencing. The curling events began the Games, but had to pause due to the sudden loss of lights.
Before the official Opening Ceremony at the San Siro scheduled for Friday, some competitions had already started. The first mixed doubles round robin matches were affected by the power failure at the Olympic Ice Stadium, causing a delay.
Officials stopped play during the match between Britain’s Bruce Mouat and Jen Dodds in the first end against Norway. Despite the interruption, Dodds maintained a positive attitude, even laughing as the officials worked to resolve the issue.
BBC commentator Steve Cram humorously remarked on the situation, noting the power cut at the stadium. However, after a brief delay of about five minutes, the lights flickered back on, and the competition resumed, much to the amusement of the crowd.
Dodds and Mouat secured an 8-6 victory to kick off the round robin phase impressively, with Mouat jokingly describing the power outage as a “dance and a boogie, a rave, nightclub.”
UK Sport aims to surpass its previous Winter Games medal count of five by potentially winning up to eight medals in Milano Cortina. With significant funding from the National Lottery and government, UK Sport has invested over £32.5m in winter sports over the current four-year cycle.
Eve Muirhead OBE, a gold medalist from Beijing 2022, has transitioned into a leadership role within Team GB for Milan-Cortina 2026. She expressed confidence in the team’s potential to challenge the status quo despite facing challenges in accessing snow and ice compared to other nations.
