The leader of the Labour Party has cautioned Vladimir Putin about the UK’s surveillance of Russian activities in British waters following the appearance of a suspicious vessel known as a “zombie” ship in the Channel.
Anna Turley emphasized the collaboration between Keir Starmer and international partners, expressing her admiration for his efforts on the global stage. An oil tanker named Tavian was observed heading towards Finland, 20 miles north of Guernsey in the early morning, as per ship tracking records.
Tavian is believed to be linked to Vladimir Putin’s clandestine fleet, which is allegedly used to circumvent restrictions on Russian oil trade.
Speaking to Sky News, Labour Party chair Ms. Turley stated, “The government has the capability to monitor activities in the surrounding waters. I am proud to see Keir Starmer’s engagement with the coalition of willing nations, particularly in supporting Ukraine and global initiatives.”
Less than a day later, the UK assisted the US in seizing a Russian-flagged tanker in the North Atlantic. Scottish Secretary Douglas Alexander labeled the ship, Marinera, as part of Russia’s shadow fleet financing the conflict in Ukraine.
Emphasizing the importance of working alongside international allies to counter Russian sanctions evasion, Mr. Alexander highlighted the involvement of RAF surveillance aircraft and the naval supply ship RFA Tideforce in aiding the operation.
The vessel, previously known as Bella 1 and associated with Venezuela, was intercepted between Iceland and Scotland. Following the operation, the US military’s European Command expressed gratitude towards the UK for its steadfast support.
Mr. Alexander stressed the UK’s commitment to preventing the illegal funding of conflicts and terrorism, underscoring the need to collaborate with allies to tackle ongoing Russian sanction violations. He also mentioned ongoing efforts to disrupt financial support for Putin’s military operations.
Authorities in the UK and other countries are actively seeking ways to cut off financial streams that fuel Putin’s military activities.
