Donald Trump seems to have exposed a private text message he received from French President Emmanuel Macron prior to his threat of imposing 200% tariffs on French wine and Champagne.
Trump mentioned that the tariffs would pressure Macron into participating in his proposed “Board of Peace.” In response to Macron’s statement about not joining the board, Trump commented that nobody wants Macron as he will soon be out of office. Trump suggested that implementing a 200% tariff on French wines and Champagnes would compel Macron to join the board, although he clarified that joining was not mandatory.
A source close to Macron revealed that France plans to reject the invitation to join the US-backed initiative. Trump later disclosed on Truth Social that Macron had messaged him about Greenland before he raised the prospect of substantial tariffs on France.
A screenshot displayed Macron informing Trump that they share common ground on Iran and Syria but expressed confusion about Trump’s actions concerning Greenland.
In the alleged texts, Macron proposed arranging a meeting with Trump and other G7 leaders post the World Economic Forum in Davos, and extended an invitation to Trump for dinner in Paris on Thursday.
Originally introduced in September to oversee the reconstruction of war-torn Gaza, the ‘Board of Peace’ now has a broader objective of ending global conflicts, as outlined by Trump in an invitation sent to world leaders last week.
A preliminary plan directed at about 60 nations requests members to contribute $1 billion in cash to maintain their membership for more than three years.
Countries like Australia, Brazil, Cyprus, Egypt, Italy, Jordan, New Zealand, Pakistan, Turkey, and Vietnam are among those invited to join the board. Additionally, Trump confirmed extending an invitation to Putin, who is reportedly contemplating the offer.
