An ordinary-looking grandmother shocked the public by committing a heinous crime, as she killed her husband before murdering another woman to assume her identity.
Lois Ann Riess, known as the “Killer Grandma,” triggered a nationwide manhunt in 2018 after disappearing from her Minnesota residence following the discovery of her husband’s body with multiple gunshot wounds.
Investigations pointed towards Lois as the main suspect, revealing that she forged her husband’s signature, emptied his accounts, and fled to evade authorities due to a long-standing gambling addiction.
Upon relocating to Fort Myers Beach, Riess befriended Pamela Hutchinson, a woman resembling her in age and appearance, with the intention of stealing Hutchinson’s identity.
Tragically, Hutchinson was later found dead in her vacation condo, with Riess absconding with her personal belongings to travel across multiple states, attempting to escape law enforcement.
After a prolonged search, Riess was apprehended by US Marshals in a Texas restaurant, culminating in the recovery of two handguns from her motel room.
Riess confessed to both murders, receiving life imprisonment without parole in Florida for Hutchinson’s death and a second life sentence in Minnesota for her husband’s murder.
During court proceedings, Riess’s children expressed their profound emotional distress caused by her actions, with her daughter lamenting feelings of anger, regret, and sorrow, while her son emphasized the devastating impact of her abandonment.
Despite Riess attributing her actions to a “psychotic break” stemming from gambling addiction and mental health struggles, prosecutors and media professionals remain skeptical of her claims.
