“UK Survey: Majority Support Rejoining EU”

Date:

A recent survey conducted by Deltapoll for The Mirror reveals that a significant majority of people in the UK would support rejoining the European Union if another Brexit referendum were to take place. The survey found that 58% of respondents would vote to return to the EU if given the opportunity.

Among different age groups, support for reversing Brexit was particularly strong among 18 to 24-year-olds, with 86% in favor of rejoining the bloc. Conversely, older voters were more inclined to support remaining outside the EU, with 55 to 64-year-olds and over-65s showing preferences for staying out by narrow margins.

Political party affiliations also played a role in the survey results, with Conservative and Reform voters largely in favor of maintaining the status quo, while Labour and Lib Dem supporters showed stronger leanings towards rejoining the EU.

The survey indicated that every region in the UK showed a preference for returning to the EU, with Scotland, London, and Wales having the highest levels of support. Despite some variations, even regions like the Midlands and the North expressed a preference for rejoining the EU.

In recent developments, UK Labour leader Keir Starmer has been working towards strengthening ties with the EU, including striking a trade deal with Brussels and announcing the UK’s intention to rejoin the Erasmus+ program for student exchanges in Europe.

While there have been calls for closer alignment with the EU, Starmer has emphasized that his party’s manifesto does not include plans to reverse Brexit but rather seeks a closer relationship with the EU. This stance aligns with the UK government’s position, which has reiterated its commitment to resetting and strengthening its relationship with the EU while maintaining certain “red lines” such as not rejoining the single market or customs union.

Overall, the survey results reflect a shift in public sentiment towards rejoining the EU, influenced by factors such as geopolitical considerations, the changing international landscape, and the perceived need for closer ties with European neighbors.
