Users of various devices, notably Samsung models, are encountering screen flickering issues while using the Gmail app, causing text disappearance or showing blank white boxes instead of messages. This problem has led frustrated individuals to voice their grievances on social media platforms, seeking resolution for the malfunction. One user, Jeremiah, expressed dissatisfaction with the situation, particularly on folding devices like the Samsung Fold, emphasizing the urgency for a fix.
Similar complaints have surfaced on Google’s support forums, with affected users describing the screen flickering problem when attempting to view emails. Despite attempting common troubleshooting steps like force-stopping the app, clearing the cache, and device restarts, the issue persists, indicating a more intrinsic problem.
According to Google’s product expert Kimiya Kitani, the root cause seems to be associated with Android System WebView, a critical component enabling apps to display web content internally. Kitani highlighted that certain devices, including Samsung tablets, are experiencing intermittent complications with Android System WebView, prompting Google’s attention to address the issue promptly.
While the exact number of impacted users remains uncertain, reports indicate that Samsung foldable devices such as the Galaxy Z Fold series and specific Galaxy tablets are significantly affected. As a temporary fix, Kitani suggested rotating the device to mitigate the flickering, offering a quick workaround for users experiencing the issue.
In the interim, users are advised to open emails in portrait mode, rotate the device to landscape orientation to stabilize the display, then revert to portrait mode. This simple approach serves as a temporary solution until Google releases a permanent fix for the recurring problem.
