“FTSE 100 CEOs Rake in £4.4M, 113x Worker Salary”

Date:

The head honchos of major FTSE 100 companies are making a killing, with top executives pocketing millions in pay and perks. A recent report by the High Pay Centre revealed that these CEOs earned an average of £4.4 million last year, up from £4.22 million in 2024.

Shockingly, these executives only need a few days to surpass the annual income of an average UK worker. The median pay for a FTSE 100 CEO is a staggering 113 times higher than the average full-time worker’s salary of £39,039.

The report coincides with the recent passing of the Employment Rights Act, which aims to empower workers by granting trade unions access to workplaces and informing employees of their right to unionize. The decline in union membership over the years has contributed to the widening pay gap between executives and workers, leading to increased inequality.

Andrew Speke, interim director of the High Pay Centre, criticized the disparity in compensation, emphasizing the need for corporate governance reform and greater worker representation on company boards. He called for taxing companies that excessively compensate their top earners to invest in reducing inequalities and enhancing social mobility.

TUC General Secretary Paul Nowak echoed these sentiments, highlighting the importance of the Employment Rights Act in improving working conditions for millions of workers. He also called for measures to curb boardroom greed and ensure that workers have a say in executive pay decisions.

GMB union spokesperson emphasized the ongoing struggles of workers amidst a cost of living crisis, underscoring the significance of the Workers’ Rights Act in leveling the playing field for fair pay.

In light of these findings, addressing corporate excess and empowering workers through legislation are crucial steps towards achieving a more equitable and just economic landscape.
