“Female Prison Officer Accused of Relationships with Inmates & Drug Smuggling”

Date:

A court was informed that a female prison officer engaged in “intimate relationships” with inmates and illicitly brought drugs into a jail. Kayleigh Robson, aged 29, allegedly developed inappropriate romances with prisoners at HMP Peterborough over a nine-month span. It is claimed that she also smuggled cannabis and tobacco into the privately-operated Category B prison and was allegedly involved in a money laundering scheme.

Robson, residing in Grantham, Lincolnshire, pleaded not guilty to all accusations. During a brief hearing, the mother-of-one only confirmed her name, date of birth, and pleas.

The allegations against her include “wilfully misconducting herself” in public office by engaging in “intimate relationships with prisoners” from June 1, 2020, to February 28, 2021. Additionally, between July 23, 2020, and April 19, 2021, she allegedly conspired with others to introduce cannabis and tobacco into the prison and participated in an alleged money laundering operation involving bank transfers.

The detailed misconduct charge specifies that at Peterborough, while serving as a public officer, specifically a prison officer, she deliberately and without reasonable excuse or justification conducted herself in a manner that constituted an abuse of the public’s trust in the office holder by engaging in intimate relationships with prisoners.

Robson, along with three men, appeared in court, while two others are scheduled for subsequent proceedings. Adam Hussain, 28, Ashley Neal, 30, and Roy Shalliker, 67, denied plotting to bring contraband into HMP Peterborough. Hussain and Neal also denied the money laundering charge.

Robson and her co-defendants were released on bail, with a two-week trial set for April 2027 at Huntingdon Crown Court. Judge Philip Grey expressed regret over the lengthy wait, attributing it to a significant court backlog. He cautioned the defendants about the repercussions of failing to attend the trial, emphasizing the potential legal consequences and the possibility of the trial proceeding in their absence.
