BBC TV License Fee to Increase to £180 Annually

Date:

The BBC license fee is scheduled to increase shortly, as confirmed by the Department for Media, Culture, and Sport. Starting April 1, the annual fee for a TV license will be £180, up from the current £174.50.

A TV license costing £174.50 per year is required to watch or record live TV programs on any device, including TVs, PCs, laptops, tablets, or phones. Watching any content on BBC iPlayer necessitates a TV license, whether live or on catch-up. However, a TV license is not needed for catch-up viewing on platforms like Netflix, Amazon Prime, ITVX, Disney Plus, YouTube, All 4, or My5.

Failure to have a TV license while watching live TV can lead to a potential fine of £1,000. In the 2023/24 fiscal year, the license fee contributed to 68% of BBC funding, with the total BBC income amounting to £5.39 billion.

Individuals aged 75 and over who claim Pension Credit are eligible for a free TV license. Students living away from home may also be covered if their parents hold a TV license, provided they watch TV on devices like phones, tablets, or laptops.

Special discounts apply for households with blind or severely sight-impaired residents, as well as for those living in residential care or sheltered accommodation. The TV license fee typically increases annually in April based on the previous September Consumer Price Index (CPI) inflation rate.

Following the confirmed 3.8% inflation rate in September, the TV license fee will rise to £180 from April 1. This increase translates to an additional £5.50 annually for a color TV license, equivalent to a 46p per month rise.
