I have recently come back from providing essential assistance to emergency responders and labor union members in the Donbas area of Ukraine.
In the midst of daily power outages, missile attacks, and the tragic loss of innocent lives in various settings like homes, schools, hospitals, and even preschools, the Ukrainian people exhibit remarkable resilience. While they yearn for peace, they are steadfast in their refusal to surrender their nation to Russian control and the hardships of living under occupation.
During my visit to the Save Ukraine facility, I encountered children who had been rescued from the occupied territories. Shockingly, one in ten of these children had experienced sexual abuse. The number of over 20,000 children reportedly taken by Russia is likely an underestimate, indicating a widespread occurrence of child exploitation.
Amidst these distressing circumstances, the actions of sanctioned Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich are drawing criticism. He is impeding the transfer of £2.5 billion from the sale of Chelsea FC for aid to Ukraine, while simultaneously embroiled in a legal dispute over frozen assets in Jersey, supported by a member of the Conservative Shadow Cabinet.
Lord Wolfson KC, serving as Abramovich’s legal representation alongside former Trump advisor Eric Herschmann, signifies a concerning trend of reverting to standard practices with Russian oligarchs. Justifying this association as a standard client-lawyer relationship fails to instill confidence.
The ongoing legal battles cannot be viewed in isolation when considering the dire situation in Ukraine. With the rise of populist and far-right figures advocating for normalized ties with Moscow, including echoes from the White House, the UK is not exempt, exemplified by Nigel Farage’s alignment with Kremlin narratives.
The failure to address concerns surrounding Wolfson’s collaboration with a sanctioned oligarch raises significant doubts about the Conservative Party under Kemi Badenoch’s leadership. It is imperative for the sake of democracy to hold them accountable for this troubling situation.
In response, the Labour government must take decisive action by introducing emergency legislation to prevent sanctioned oligarchs from exploiting the UK legal system and redirecting the roughly £30 billion in frozen Russian assets in the UK to aid Ukraine.
Ukraine’s struggle for democracy places them at the forefront of a significant battle, necessitating our unwavering support. Join us outside Tory Headquarters on Wednesday, 7 January, at 5 pm to demonstrate solidarity with Ukraine and amplify your voice.
