“UK Leaders Rally to Defend BBC Against Trump Lawsuit”

Date:

Labour Leader Keir Starmer is facing calls to defend the BBC against a legal threat from Donald Trump. The UK Prime Minister has expressed support for the importance of an independent and trusted BBC and is now urged to take a stronger stance against the US President. Trump recently filed a defamation lawsuit worth billions of pounds against the BBC, alleging selective editing of his speech in a Panorama episode.

The lawsuit, filed in a Florida court, seeks damages of five billion dollars for defamation and the same amount for trade practices violation. Despite the BBC issuing an apology to Trump for the edited Panorama episode, the broadcaster rejected his compensation demands, stating there is no basis for a defamation claim. The lawsuit accuses the BBC of airing a false and malicious portrayal of Trump, aiming to interfere in the 2024 US presidential election by misrepresenting his speech on January 6, 2021.

Lib Dem Leader Ed Davey criticized the Trump administration for attempting to undermine democracy and urged Starmer to take action. He emphasized the need for Starmer to support the BBC against Trump’s legal threat and safeguard license fee payers. Health minister Stephen Kinnock supported the BBC’s firm stance against Trump’s lawsuit, highlighting the broadcaster’s right to stand by its position despite errors in the Panorama program. Kinnock reiterated the Labour Party’s commitment to defending the BBC as a crucial institution.
