“Google’s USB Kit Revives Old Laptops with ChromeOS Flex”

Date:

In a move that has left millions of laptops vulnerable to cyber threats, Microsoft halted support for Windows 10 nearly six months ago. This decision has deprived these devices of crucial security updates, exposing them to potential malware attacks. While some newer laptops can be upgraded to Windows 11 through Microsoft’s update service, older PCs that do not meet the system requirements are facing a dilemma.

Users of unsupported laptops have a few options: they can continue using them as is, pay for extended updates (ESUs), or invest in a new device pre-installed with Windows 11. However, there is now an additional alternative for aging PCs that can prolong their usefulness and prevent them from being discarded. Google has partnered with refurbished electronics retailer Back Market to introduce a USB kit that rejuvenates old laptops with ChromeOS Flex software.

ChromeOS Flex is a lightweight operating system compatible with many older computers, effectively converting them into Chromebook-like devices. Once installed, users gain access to popular services like Chrome, Gmail, Docs, and the Android app store without the expense of purchasing a new laptop. Although ChromeOS Flex has always been available for free download from Google, the new USB kits aim to simplify the installation process. Users can even test the system directly from the USB drive before committing to a full installation, a feature that has garnered significant interest, leading to current stock shortages.

Google highlighted in a blog post the significance of its collaboration with Back Market in offering a solution for computers left vulnerable by the end of Windows 10 support. The ChromeOS Flex USB Kit, priced around £3, not only gives old devices a new lease on life but also promotes sustainability by reducing electronic waste. Despite high demand, the USB stick included in the kit is reusable, further contributing to environmental conservation efforts.

Beyond the environmental benefits of prolonging the lifespan of old laptops, Google emphasizes that ChromeOS Flex is energy-efficient, consuming 19% less energy on average compared to similar systems. For those considering the switch to ChromeOS Flex, Back Market’s listing of the USB kit as out of stock indicates the growing interest in this innovative solution.
