Labour Government Fails Public Service Workers

Date:

Having served as a social worker for many years, I have witnessed firsthand the challenges faced by public service workers. Despite being 18 months into a Labour government, the situation for my colleagues remains dire.

The continuous reduction in our pay coupled with the rising costs of living has put immense strain on us. Furthermore, the systematic dismantling of essential services by politicians has only added to our struggles.

Throughout my career within a local authority, I have observed the drastic impact of austerity measures. Local authorities have been stripped of assets, with £15 billion being sold off since 2010. In my hometown of Bolton, council funding has been slashed by over a quarter in the same period, directly affecting the lives of ordinary citizens.

Despite promises of national renewal, the Labour party has fallen short in addressing these issues. There is a need for governance that prioritizes the working class without being influenced by external pressures.

To truly make a difference, Labour must focus on improving wages and reducing expenses to alleviate the cost of living. Initiatives such as inflation-proof pay rises for public workers and introducing Employment Rights Bill 2.0 can be steps in the right direction.

It is crucial for the government to invest in public services rather than diverting funds towards military endeavors. By prioritizing the well-being of the majority, real progress can be made in enhancing people’s lives.

As we usher in the new year with hope for renewal, it is important to remember those who are unjustly imprisoned for standing up against injustice. The government’s role in such matters cannot be overlooked, and it is essential to advocate for justice and fairness.

UNISON stands in solidarity with those who courageously oppose oppression, reflecting the values of its members. As a representative of the union, my commitment lies in advocating for the rights and well-being of all workers.

In light of recent events in Venezuela, it is imperative for leaders to condemn unlawful actions and uphold international law. It is crucial to distance ourselves from lawlessness and advocate for justice on a global scale.
