Fire TV Stick users are advised to be extra vigilant at this time, particularly when adding new applications to their devices. The removal of a popular tool called “Downloader” from Amazon’s Appstore has paved the way for a deceptive copycat scam app aimed at defrauding users.
The situation arose over the weekend when Downloader suddenly vanished from Amazon’s online marketplace. For almost ten years, Downloader has enabled Fire TV owners to search for and install apps not found on official platforms, offering a convenient way to access additional tools and applications that may not be readily available in certain regions.
Despite its widespread use, Downloader has faced a temporary suspension. Developer Elias Saba revealed that a recent update led Amazon to flag Downloader as a full web browser, contravening Amazon’s policy against third-party browsers on Fire TV devices.
Acknowledging Amazon’s restrictions on third-party browser apps, Saba has swiftly addressed the issue by removing the browser identification in the latest update. He anticipates Amazon’s approval in the coming days to reinstate the app on the Appstore.
In the interim, Saba cautions users about a fraudulent version of Downloader attempting to exploit confused Fire TV owners by tricking them into a weekly payment scam. He advises users not to install the app named “Downloader for Fire, Browser” and to report it to Amazon if encountered.
For existing legitimate Downloader users, it is recommended not to uninstall the app as it may not be reinstallable until Amazon resolves the issue. Additionally, users should disable Auto Offload in the device settings to prevent automatic removal of the app.
Should the fix be approved by Amazon, Downloader could reappear on Fire TV devices later in the week, necessitating users to remain vigilant throughout the situation.
