EE mobile users are being cautioned about a resurgence of a scam text message targeting them. Cybersecurity experts at Bitdefender have flagged urgent messages sent to EE customers, falsely claiming impending loss of EE reward points unless immediate action is taken. The scammers are mimicking the popular EE network to entice users into clicking on malicious links that redirect to fraudulent websites aiming to steal login credentials for financial gain.
The success of this scam hinges on creating a sense of urgency to prompt hasty responses from unsuspecting users. Bitdefender explained that scammers capitalize on tight deadlines to instill fear of losing out, with the fraudulent links leading to fake sites rather than legitimate EE platforms.
Authentic EE alerts are only displayed within official EE accounts, not via unsolicited texts. Any text urging quick action or featuring countdowns should raise suspicion and be reported by forwarding to 7726 and then deleting.
This type of scam has previously targeted EE customers, as seen earlier this year when users reported receiving convincing fake messages about reward points. Victims recounted falling for the scam by clicking on links that appeared genuine initially but turned out to be fraudulent.
To combat such scams, EE emphasizes that it does not operate a points program and has highlighted scam message examples to raise awareness. Users are advised not to click on unknown links in text messages, respond to suspicious messages, call the provided numbers, or share personal or financial information. Staying vigilant and cautious is crucial for EE users to avoid falling prey to such fraudulent activities.
