BT has released a crucial update regarding landline services, signaling a significant change for users reliant on this technology. The traditional copper cables, in use for over a century to keep us connected, are set to be phased out within the next year.
The scheduled date for this transition is January 31, 2027, prompting millions of users to shift to newer digital services utilizing internet connectivity for communication with loved ones. This move is deemed necessary by companies like BT due to the outdated and overloaded nature of the existing copper infrastructure, which no longer meets contemporary connectivity standards.
BT’s latest offering, Digital Voice, presents an upgraded system with enhanced stability and additional features such as clearer audio, call forwarding to mobile devices, and improved call screening capabilities to combat scams and unwanted marketing calls. While over three million households in the UK have already made the switch to Digital Voice, many more are yet to transition.
In a statement to Mirror Online, BT emphasized the importance of taking action promptly, as failing to do so could lead to disruptions in phone and broadband services as the deadline approaches. The shift from copper wires to digital technology is inevitable, underscoring the need for users to ensure their landline setups are prepared for the upcoming change.
Switching to digital services is relatively straightforward, with most existing BT handsets compatible with digital landlines. Users can retain their current phone numbers, and billing should remain unchanged, as there are no additional costs associated with the transition. In some cases, simply connecting the home phone to the broadband hub instead of the traditional wall socket may suffice. However, if issues arise, contacting the service provider or arranging for technical assistance may be necessary.
BT also advises customers with special requirements, such as those using telecare devices or pendant alarms, to notify their provider promptly to secure appropriate support. If uncertain about the transition status, it is advisable to verify and ensure readiness before the copper network is decommissioned.
BT Group Chief Executive Allison Kirkby stressed the importance of upgrading the UK’s digital infrastructure to ensure reliable and modern connectivity for all. As part of its extensive investment commitment, BT aims to allocate over £40 billion between 2020 and 2030 to enhance digital networks, fostering growth and opportunities for individuals, businesses, and communities.
