Trump Determined to Acquire Greenland Despite NATO Concerns

Date:

President Donald Trump has made strong comments about NATO allies while intensifying his interest in acquiring Greenland. Trump reiterated his desire to take over the Danish territory, indicating he is unconcerned about the potential impact on the defense alliance. During a press interaction on Air Force One, Trump responded to queries about the consequences of a Greenland invasion on US-NATO relations.

He asserted that any effect on NATO would not deter his plans, stating, “If it affects NATO, then it affects NATO.” Trump further criticized the organization by stating, “They need us much more than we need them.”

Despite widespread opposition in Greenland to joining the US, with only six percent of the population in favor according to a January 2025 poll, the Trump administration remains committed to acquiring Greenland either through purchase or invasion. Trump justified his stance by claiming that Greenland should agree to the deal to prevent potential takeovers by Russia or China, while also making disparaging remarks about Denmark’s defense capabilities.

The President asserted that US control of Greenland is inevitable, emphasizing, “If we don’t take Greenland, Russia or China will.” He expressed determination to secure the territory, saying, “One way or the other, we’re going to have Greenland.”

Questioning the reliability of NATO and its commitment to aiding the US in times of crisis, Trump raised doubts about whether member states would support America if attacked. He pondered on NATO’s readiness to assist, stating, “I like NATO. I just wonder whether or not if needed, NATO would they be there for us? I’m not sure they would.”

Trump seemed unaware of NATO’s support following the 9/11 attacks, where allies like the UK and Denmark stood by the US, showcasing the alliance’s solidarity. His remarks have caused concern in Europe and the US, with fears rising that the White House may distance itself from longstanding allies.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced plans to engage in discussions with Danish officials regarding Greenland. European leaders, including those in the UK, emphasized that the future of Greenland should be determined by its people and the Danish government.
