In a tragic incident at a hospital in southern Gran Canaria, a newborn baby’s body was discovered abandoned in a toilet, shocking both staff and authorities. A 31-year-old woman has been arrested by the National Police in connection with the incident, which is currently under active investigation.
The distressing finding took place at San Roque Meloneras Hospital in the municipality of San Bartolomé de Tirajana on a Sunday morning. Hospital staff found the lifeless infant in one of the toilets around 9:20 am.
Reports indicate that the baby’s body was wrapped in paper, stained with blood, and left on the hospital premises. The staff member who made the discovery promptly alerted the hospital’s security team and management, who then contacted the National Police.
Authorities dispatched officers from the Scientific Police and the Judicial Police of the Maspalomas station to the hospital. The area was cordoned off, security footage was reviewed, and evidence was collected to identify the individual responsible for abandoning the newborn.
Through CCTV analysis, law enforcement was able to identify a woman who had entered the bathroom during the alleged birth. She was later found outside the hospital near a bus shelter at the entrance, still wearing blood-stained clothing from the time of the incident. The woman, a 31-year-old Spanish citizen, was swiftly apprehended.
While police sources suggest that the woman may have drug addiction issues, this aspect is part of the ongoing investigation and remains unconfirmed.
Initial reports indicate that the woman claimed to be unaware of her pregnancy despite being close to full term. She stated that she had visited the hospital the previous evening feeling unwell and had given birth alone in a toilet without seeking medical help.
The woman asserted that the baby was born alive and cried before she wrapped it in paper and left it in the bathroom. Subsequently, she left the hospital without informing anyone.
Allegedly returning to the hospital on Sunday morning to check on the newborn, the woman was arrested when staff discovered the infant’s body. Following her apprehension, she was transferred to Gran Canaria Maternity and Children’s Hospital for custody while recovering from childbirth.
The investigation into the case is ongoing, with authorities working to ascertain the circumstances of the birth and the cause of the infant’s death. The body has been sent for examination at the Forensic Anatomical Institute, and investigators are verifying the woman’s statement to establish a timeline of events.
