An 11-year-old girl is in critical condition at UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital in Oakland after being shot in the head by a stranger while inside her father’s vehicle at an apartment complex car park on Monday around 12:40 pm.
The gunman, identified as Ryan Hardy, randomly opened fire on bystanders, causing a bullet to hit the girl’s head through the car. The victim’s father shared that her first post-incident words were heartbreaking, questioning why she couldn’t see. He expressed immense pain and disbelief, stating that it was an unbearable experience for any parent.
The incident, reported by the Antioch Police Department, witnessed a bullet penetrating the car’s back windscreen, passing through the headrest, and striking the girl. The father, who remains unidentified for safety reasons, expressed deep sorrow and fear, emphasizing the profound impact on his family.
Ryan Hardy, 23, the identified suspect, is considered armed and dangerous. Authorities urge the public to report any information on Hardy’s whereabouts, warning against harboring or assisting him. An ongoing investigation is in place to apprehend the perpetrator.
A GoFundMe campaign initiated by relatives revealed the family’s decision to permanently leave Antioch due to safety concerns, necessitating abandoning their residence, employment, and community. The fundraising aims to support the girl’s extensive medical treatment, therapy, and emotional recovery, with uncertain expectations on her functional restoration.
The campaign highlights the family’s integrity, humility, and hard work, acknowledging the unforeseen circumstances that led them to seek assistance. Over $7,800 has been raised to aid in relocation expenses, lost income, emergency living costs, and ongoing medical requirements.
