A tragic incident during a routine MRI exam led to the death of a young boy. Six-year-old Michael Colombini sustained fatal injuries when a metal oxygen tank was propelled by the MRI machine’s magnetic field, resulting in severe head trauma. The incident occurred at Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla, located north of New York City.
Michael was undergoing the MRI procedure following surgery for a benign brain tumor. Despite being under sedation, the accident occurred, leading to his tragic passing two days later. The medical center’s president, Edward Stolzenberg, expressed deep sorrow and took full responsibility for the unfortunate event.
MRI scanners use magnetic forces and radio frequencies to generate detailed internal body images for medical diagnosis. While generally safe, rare accidents like this one serve as reminders of the importance of adherence to safety protocols during MRI scans.
In a separate incident last year, a 61-year-old man, Keith McAllister, lost his life in a similar MRI accident in Westbury, Long Island. He was pulled into the machine by his necklace, causing critical injuries. Keith’s wife, Adrienne Jones-McAllister, recounted the harrowing experience, revealing that he was wearing a heavy chain despite guidelines to remove all metal objects before the scan.
Following these tragic events, it is crucial for healthcare facilities and patients to prioritize safety measures during MRI procedures to prevent such accidents from reoccurring.
