Sultan Kosen, the world’s tallest man at 8ft 2in (243cm), holds the Guinness World Record as the tallest living man since 2009, surpassing competitors for the title. The 43-year-old from Ankara, Turkey, outgrew his peers early on, standing over 5ft tall at nine years old.
Despite his towering height, Sultan faced social challenges in his youth as his immense stature led to isolation from his friends who were intimidated by his size. This, coupled with vision problems, caused him to retreat into seclusion, feeling ashamed of his uniqueness and missing out on a typical childhood.
As he continued to grow, Sultan’s concerns about his future escalated, leading to medical intervention that revealed a tumor in his pituitary gland, believed to be the cause of his extraordinary height and vision issues. Following successful surgery and a second operation in 2008, Sultan’s life took a pivotal turn when he was officially recognized by Guinness World Records as the world’s tallest man, boasting the largest hands and feet as well.
Grateful for the validation the record brought, Sultan expressed a sense of acceptance but acknowledged the ongoing challenges of his height, especially when traveling. His size restricts his choice of transportation and accommodation, requiring special arrangements for flights, cars, and even hotel beds – with three single beds placed together to accommodate his extraordinary height.
Despite his initial struggles with acceptance, Sultan now appreciates the fame his stature has brought him, allowing him to forge connections worldwide. However, in 2023, his claim to fame was momentarily challenged by reports of Sulemana Abdul Samed from Ghana, who was purportedly measured taller but later confirmed shorter by a BBC reporter due to measurement discrepancies.
