The organizers of Your Party had aimed to move past contentious disputes as they gathered for their founding conference recently. Former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn urged unity at the event, emphasizing the need for coming together in his address to over 2,000 delegates.
Despite rumors of disruptions, the conference proceeded smoothly, with only one barely audible heckler present. The party, plagued by internal conflicts since its inception, faced challenges related to donations, membership launch issues, and the departure of two independent MPs, Adnan Hussain and Iqbal Mohamed, which played into the hands of the Greens.
Corbyn, making a return to the same stage he graced as Labour leader in 2018, cautioned against division and called for a united front in pursuing real socialism and social justice. However, the conference faced turmoil as former Labour MP Zarah Sultana expressed disappointment over expulsions from the party just before the event, emphasizing the need to avoid a culture of witch hunts.
Sultana’s brief appearance outside the conference center sparked confusion, with her denouncing recent expulsions and advocating for a more inclusive party. The following day, she took the stage to deliver her keynote speech, acknowledging shortcomings in the party’s establishment process and expressing regret for any disruptions caused.
Despite the setbacks, there was enthusiasm over the members’ decision to opt for a committee-led leadership structure until 2027, rejecting the traditional single leadership model favored by Corbyn. The conference concluded with the announcement of the party’s official name, “Your Party,” chosen through a members’ vote.
Corbyn reiterated the importance of unity as the party embarks on a new leadership model, emphasizing the impact of their actions on people across the country. The future success of the party hinges on the ability of delegates to work together effectively in this new era.
