Graham Thorpe’s spouse believes that had he received more assistance from the England and Wales Cricket Board after resigning from his coaching position, he might still be alive today.
A highly respected batsman of his era and England’s former assistant coach until 2021, Thorpe tragically took his own life in August last year following a prolonged struggle with anxiety and depression. During an inquest in July 2025 at Surrey Coroner’s Court in Woking, it was revealed that Thorpe had descended into depression after losing his coaching role in 2022, and had previously attempted suicide.
The coroner, Jonathan Stevens, pointed out deficiencies in the care provided to Thorpe by healthcare professionals leading up to his passing, ruling his death as suicide. Thorpe had been undergoing mental health therapy for 18 months prior to his departure from the ECB.
Stevens mentioned that the organization had supported Thorpe post his departure in February 2022 by financing his treatment, hospital stays, and extending his health insurance. However, Amanda, his widow, feels that more support could have been offered to help him through the transitional phase.
In an interview with talkSPORT, she expressed that had Thorpe not felt completely uprooted from his cricketing career, he might have still been alive. Amanda emphasized the importance of having a support system during such a significant life change.
She remarked, “In hindsight, it’s evident that if he had a support framework to rely on during the transition, it could have made a difference.” Amanda also criticized the remote support provided as insufficient and inadequate.
Describing Thorpe’s deteriorating state during therapy sessions, she shared that despite seeking additional help, it was not forthcoming. The ECB has been approached for comment on the matter.
